Abu Dhabi is set to host the International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) 3×3 World Tour Final in 2016 following this year’s highly successful staging of the event’s final in the UAE capital which FIBA deemed one of the best ever.
In a letter of appreciation to Abu Dhabi Sports Council, the FIBA Secretary General, Patrick Baumann, said the UAE capital’s hosting “has become a benchmark for future ones.”
The 3×3 World Tour Final was held in a specially-erected venue at Nations Tower on Abu Dhabi Corniche when 12 teams, from the UAE, Central Europe, the Far East and the Americas, battled for glory. The honours eventually went to local team Novi Sad Al Wahda which successfully defended its title.
Abu Dhabi’s hosting brought fulsome praise from the FIBA Secretary General who said: “this event has been one of our best World Tour events so far” and was, according to Baumann, a testament to having the short form of the game recognised in sport’s biggest global showcase of athletic prowess.
“It reinforces the arguments to have 3×3 included in the Olympic programme,” he said.
Abu Dhabi Sports Council, which hosted the World Tour Final and has committed to next year’s event, said 3×3 ideally fits the emirate’s objectives of delivering world-class events and promoting inclusive, healthy lifestyles.
“This is a sport which is now followed by 250 million players worldwide and is ranked among one of the most played recreational sports on the planet,” said HE Aref Al Awani, ADSC’s General Secretary.
“It is also a discipline which is helping to promote basketball worldwide, an ideal we support. Basketball’s cross-nationality appeal resonates with us and we will work closely with FIBA to ensure the 2016 event builds on our recent hosting success”, concluded His Excellency.
